Taragarh is a picturesque residential
estate nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. The property
belongs to the royal family of the erstwhile Princely state of Jammu
& Kashmir.
Formerly known as Alhilal (land of the crescent moon), the palace, was built in the early 1930s as a summer resorts. It was bought by the royal family of Jammu & Kashmir in 1951 for the dowager Maharani who lived there for several years. It is now run as a hotel by the present royal family. |

approachable road that could be undertaken by you one of the routes
that you could take is via Una and other is via Bilaspur Mandi ,
Usually it would be advisable to take the Route via Una.
The routing via Una is Delhi ---Chandigarh ---Rupnagar (ropar) ---Kiratpur---Anandpur-Sahib-
Nangal Una---Ambala---Pragpur---Dheragopipur---Ranital----Kangra---Nagrota---Palampur
(11kms)---Taragarh.
The other routing is Delhi ---Chandigarh ---Rupnagar (Ropar)---Kiratpur---Bilaspur---Sundernagar-Mandi---Jogindernagar---Baijnath---Taragarh.

For the more energetic and adventurous visitors various interesting activities can be arranged on request in the surrounding mountains, streams and valleys.
Trekking : Treks of varying intensities ranging from 6 to 17 days can be organised on the following known routes :
a) Taragarh - Bir - Jatingri - Taragarh (6 days).
b) Bir - Billing - Plachak -Thamsar -
Jot - Base - RajGundha - Billing - Bir (9 days).
c) Kangra - Kulu (12 days).
d) Kangra - Manali via Barabanghal (17 days).
Hang Gliding : Billing is said to be one of the finest sites for hang gliding in the world. It is the site for the international hang gliding and Para gliding competitions held every year organised by Himachal Tourism. If you want to simply stay at Taragarh and relax you can spend the day at the swimming pool, playing tennis or badminton. Short walks and day treks with a packed lunch around Taragarh are very popular with our guests.
Angling :
The picturesque Kangra valley has several spots that offer mahaseer river carp. The reservoir of the Maharana Pratap sagar right up to the town of Dehra has good spots. Nadaun along the river Beas has some good beats, besides Chamba Pattan near Garli (accessible from Nadaun or Jwalamukhi), Amtar (2 km from Nadaun), Harsi Pattan (30 km from Tira Sujanpur) and Lambagaon (15 km from Tira Sujanpur).
Water And River Sports : The Maharana Pratap Sagar reservoir in Kangra with its 42 km length and 2 km breadth, offers a variety of activities in close collaboration with the Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied Sports. Year long activities include swimming, water-skiing, surfing, kayaking, rowing, canoeing and sailing. Three levels of courses are conducted - beginner, intermediate and advanced.
Sight Seeing :
Dharamsala : (60 kms.), is the principal town ship of the region and is magnificently set to the back ground of the Dhauladhar mountains.Pine Forest cover the hill sides and numerous streams cut a path thorough them allowing for exciting opportunities for fishing.
Tashijong Monastery :
This monastery is one of the several built after the Dalai Lama settled here. Tashijong also promotes arts like carpet weaving, tankha painting and block printing and runs a school for young Tibetan children. more info
Mcleodgunj : This is a residence of Dalai Lama and the is a settelement of Tibetian Buddhist who sought refuge here in the year 1960 following their exile from Tibet.more info
St.John' Church : One elegant Church is of St.John's Church in wilderness containing some priceless stained glass windows. One panel potrays Christ and the other St.Paul's the Baptist.
