The hills of Uttarakhand have all the ingredients for adventure, packed with excitement and thrill - an unexplored valley, towering peaks, flowing rivers, snow-capped mountains, a splendid combination of flora and fauna and vast tracts of virgin snow. It offers some of the best venues for adventure sports such as skiing, river rafting, canoeing, paragliding and rock climbing. Founded by Guru Dronacharya, according to the epic of Mahabharata, Dehradun is today one of the most developed cities of India. Situated on the threshold of a world full of adventure, spiritualism and tranquility, amidst the Shivalik ranges, the foothills of Himalayas, and is an entry point into the Garhwal Himalayas. A gateway to the popular hill station of Mussoorie and the pilgrimage centres of Haridwar and Rishikesh. Dehradun boasts of the famous Forest Research Institute and the Indian Military Accedemy. Doon Valley finds its place between the two most important rivers of India Ganga and Yamuna,. The thump of tuskars of Rajaji national park, the rhymes of water at kempty falls, the silence of snow capped Dhanaulty hills and the bells of arti of haridwar all add life to the beautiful stretch of the land. The magic of city is felt to be believed and is picturesque with moderate climate and a still many more number of places of tourist interest. The city is well connected by rail and road. Picnic Spot Places Mussoriee and kempty falls: Known as the queen of hill stations Mussorie is located at a height of 2,500 meters in the green Himalayan range. Mussorie is an excellent respite for tourists and people who want relief from the hot sultry conditions of the plains. Nature has gifted Mussoorie everything which makes a place beautiful. Mussoorie is one hour journey from Dehradun. So, some people come here to spend their week ends. Kempty Falls, located 15kms. from Mussoorie are the biggest attraction of the place. With water cascading down from an altitude of 4,500 feet and splitting further into five cascades it offers a panoramic view. Dhanulty: Unspoilt, unexplored Dhanaulti is as close to nature as can be. Rows of Deodars, vast green meadows and a gentle cool breeze greet you about 30 km from Mussorie beyond Landour. Dhanaulti provides excellent views of the snow capped Himalayan ranges. From Dhanaulti one can take a day trip to Surkhunda Devi about 10 km away. One has to trek for about 2 km to a height of about 3000m which provides a 180 degree view of the mountain ranges from the top. Tibetan temple, clement town:The World Peace Stupa in Clement town is the largest in the world offering a panoramic aerial view of the city. Surrounded by soft and supple grasslands, this tibetian temple is a must visit place in Dehradun. Bestowed with the state of the art Buddhist statues, a tibetian monastery and shopping hangouts, this stupa is situated in the subtle cantonment area of the city. Rajaji National Park : Rajaji National Park is situated at a distance of 23 km from Dehradun. This densely forested sanctuary is known for its elephants, barking deer, leopards, sambar and peafowl and a variety of birds. The forest around this region contains 3 sanctuaries, Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla. In the year 1983, the three parks were merged into one and named Rajaji after the great freedom fighter C. Rajagopalachari., it is especially known for its elephant population.. Rajaji is a magnificent ecosystem at the beginning of the vast Indo-Gangetic plains, and has the vegetation of several zones and forest types. It is home to as many as 23 species of mammals and 315 bird species.The park has a implausible safari at Chila stretched across the banks of river Ganga. Sahastradhara : Around 14 km from Dehradun is the cold Sulphur water spring. The spring is believed to have exceptional medicinal value and the dripping caves and a bath in the Baldi River near the spring are said to rejuvenate the body and soul. Many people come to the spring in the hope of being cured from polio and other such ailments. Set amidst the picturesque bounty of nature, Sahastradhara has become quite popular with tourists off late. Malsi Deer Park : It is situated at the foothills of the Shivalik range, about 10 km from Dehradun, The park with its deer, neelgai, and a variety of birds makes it an ideal excursion site. It also serves as a picnic spot where the tourists en route to Mussorie can take a break. A mini-zoo with a children’s park and lovely natural surroundings do their bit to attract tourists of all age groups. Chakrata : In 1866, the British turned Chakrata (92km from Dehra Dun) into a cantonment. Located at a height of 2,135m, the place offers an excellent view of the Himalayas. Robber's Cave : Situated on the outskirts of the city, is a famous view point. Also known as Guchu Pani, and situated at a distance of eight km from the city center, Robbers cave is a beautiful picnic spot. On display here is one of natures strange phenomena; a stream of water goes underground here and reappears a few meters away. The cave is surrounded by hills and is a beautiful getaway for those looking for peace and quiet of the hills. Fun valley: It is located in the "Golden Triangle of Uttarakhand" - Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh and is equidistance from all three towns. It's an integrated leisure complex, combining in one place an amusement park, water park club facilities, an overnight stay resort with beautiful cottages, and highway motel-cum-rest stop incorporating multi-cuisine food court and shopping arcade.
